I was about to enter backstage, when Jimmy popped up right beside me out of nowhere.
âJimmy!â I pressed my hand against my heart. âYou scared me.â
His eyes went to my hand on my chest and flicked back to mine. âYou donât have to be scared of me.â
âYeah, well, donât sneak up on people like that and they wonât be scared of you.â
He scowled, crossing his arms over chest. âI just wanted to talk to you.â
âThis is definitely not the way to do it.â
His eyes narrowed. âIs this about me asking you for that interview, or something else?â
âThis?â
âYour attitude toward me.â
I folded my arms over my chest as well. âI donât know, Jimmy, you tell me. How would you feel if someone saw you just as a clickbait article?â I didnât add that he creeped me out with his constant staring and grim face. And what the hell had that been in the cafeteria earlier?
âClickbait article? Thatâs not what it was. I just wanted people to hear your side of the story.â
âOh, yeah? Well, try to be more tactful next time. There are too many tactless journalists already.â
His eyes flared with anger, and he took an abrupt step closer to me. âYou donât get to lecture me on how to be a fucking journalist.â
Whoa. Okay.
My heart began to pound, my eyes going to his clenched hands. Dylanâs words about what heâd done in the newsroom replayed in my head, and I didnât want to be on the receiving end of things if he lost it now.
âOkay, Jimmy. Whatever you say.â I pushed forward, indicating that this conversation was over.
âIâm not done talking to you.â
Was he serious? I didnât reply or stop, releasing a long breath once I arrived on stage.
Lori and Stella were in the midst of a staring contest with Lucas, which ended every time with Lori or Stella losing. Lucasâs âresting bitch face,â as Lori had put it, was legendary of sorts, allowing him to win every single time. Lucas waved at me to join them, and I readily approached. This was a game I was good at.
âOkay, Katie. Letâs see what youâve got,â Lucas told me from where he was sitting cross-legged on the floor.
I relaxed my facial muscles and stared back at him, telling myself to focus on how green his eyes were and not how I wanted to laugh.
âYou can do it, Katie,â Stella told me. âShow him heâs not unbeatable.â
âYeah, win for us,â Lori added, and I could feel my lips were a second away from twitching. I inhaled a deep breath through my nose and kept focusing on the irises of his eyes.
âHey,â I heard Jasonâs voice in the background, where Tallie was sitting with Ling, and my concentration broke instantly.
My lips curled up, and Lucas smacked his knee. âYeah, babe! You laughed! Whoâs the king now, huh?â He winked at Stella, and she blushed.
My smile stretched. Something was brewing between those two.
Just then, my eyes went to Jason, and I caught him looking at my mouth.
